Baby panda info

What are the baby panda's predators?

Although adult giant pandas have few natural predators other than humans, young cubs are vulnerable to attacks by snow leopards, yellow-throated martens, eagles, feral dogs , and the Asian black bear . Sub-adults weighing up to 50 kg (110 lb) may be vulnerable to predation by leopards.

Do baby pandas have predators?

Although pandas have very few natural predators, they are at risk of being preyed on by jackals, leopards and yellow-throated martens , a type of weasel that feeds on panda cubs. Snow leopards are a definite threat to panda bears, as they reside in the same mountainous areas of central China.

How often does the panda have babies?

The panda reproduction cycle is a long one. Normally a mother gives birth to a baby panda every two years. However it is not uncommon for a mother to wait three or even four years before giving birth. Females have a litter size of one or sometimes two cubs. Baby pandas are born blind.

Do pandas protect their babies?

The giant pandas are not really giants at the time of birth. Instead they are quite tiny. So, the mother panda is extremely protective of its young because they can be easily carried away by birds and other predators. After about a week, the baby panda starts developing its own color and their body also starts to darken.
